Moira Buffini

Playwright, Author & Screenwriter

Moira Buffini is an acclaimed British playwright, screenwriter, and dramatist known for her powerful storytelling and imaginative exploration of politics, history, and human relationships. Born in Cheshire, England, she grew up in a creative family with Irish roots, influences that later shaped the richness and emotional depth of her writing.

Buffini studied at Goldsmiths before establishing herself as one of Britain’s leading contemporary playwrights. She first gained recognition in the theatre world during the 1990s with plays that combined sharp dialogue, dark humour, and strong female characters.

Among her best-known stage works are Dinner, a satirical comedy examining morality and social pretension, and Handbagged, which imagines the complex relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The latter became one of her most celebrated productions, praised for its wit, political insight, and theatrical inventiveness.

Buffini has also written extensively for film and television. She co-wrote the screenplay for the critically acclaimed film Jane Eyre and contributed to adaptations and original screen projects that demonstrate her versatility across different forms of storytelling. Her work often explores themes of power, identity, gender, and social inequality.

In television, she has written for major productions including historical dramas and literary adaptations. Her scripts are recognised for their emotional intelligence, vivid characterisation, and ability to balance intimacy with large political or historical themes.

Throughout her career, Buffini has been nominated for a number of prestigious awards including two BAFTA Film awards in 2021. Moira also won an Olivier Award in 2014 and the 2025 YA Book Prize.
