Stuart Murphy CBE

Former CEO, English National Opera

Stuart Murphy's background is TV, the arts and tech. He was the first head of BBC3, the first head of Sky Atlantic and ran several other TV channels, responsible for over 90 comedies (including Gavin and Stacey and Little Britain) and 40 dramas. He gave the first job to many of the current faces on TV including Alan Carr, Tess Daly, John Bishop, Leigh Francis, Tameka Epsom and Karl Pilkington has worked with everyone from Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Claudia Winkelman, Ross Kemp, Matt Lucas and David Walliams, Ricky Gervais, James Corden, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon and many many others.  After TV he became Chief Executive of the English National Opera and London Coliseum, London's largest theatre, where he introduced completely free tickets to Under 21 year olds, staged the world's first drive-in opera and ensured at least 20% of all singers were from a diverse background. As someone from a humble background in Leeds, and the first in his family to go to university, fairness and access for everyone are things he is passionate about. He now sits on the Board of the University of Leeds (where he grew up), LuvJus (a digital content company watched by over 60m Millenials worldwide), Social Media Check (that checks the background of contestants for TV shows) as well as advising companies from dog food to TV networks to AI companies. He loves dogs, rugby, rollercoasters, classical music and comedy and is based in London and Birmingham.
