Building Success Stories

In May 2026, Hannah Telfer, Managing Director of Penguin Random House’s VINTAGE division, delivered an exciting industry talk at Roundhay School as part of our Speakers for Schools Programme. The talk offered real-world insights into publishing, helping to demystify the sector and inspire students – something Hannah is incredibly passionate about:

“I grew up in the north-west of England: no one worked in publishing, and it was never presented as a career option. Now I work with Futures For All and focus on school visits in the north-west of England with the goal of opening up the publishing industry to those who may not have access otherwise.”

Joining Hannah to build the story were colleagues Chris Sturtivant, Assistant Editor; Orla Schätzlein, Editor; and Louise Navarro-Cann, Assistant Editor – all working in the iconic world and rich legacy of classical literature.

Inside the Talk

Following an introduction that celebrated Penguin’s history and impact since 1935, the talk turned to the broad range of careers that bring stories and books to life – including those that aren't usually associated with publishing. The key takeaway: there are jobs for everyone!

Hannah discussed her career trajectory, highlighting the multiple positions she’s held at Penguin and the value of transferable skills and experiences for career progression – combined with passion and curiosity. Chris, Orla and Louise spoke about their roles and responsibilities in the editorial department, offering insights into the editorial process and early publishing careers. Young people gained an understanding of career pathways and tips for employability, setting them up for future success – before putting their questions to the speakers in a live Q&A.

“I've been to a lot of careers talks but that was by far the best one.”
